A Columbus Day Picnic and Sailing Party
>> Friday, October 30, 2009
There is a huge misconception about the voyage that Christopher Columbus made to North America in 1492 and the meaning behind Columbus Day, which is celebrated on the 12th of October in the U.S., Spain, and Italy. Christopher Columbus and his crew are renowned for reaching the New World. The legend has it that the trip for which Columbus Day is celebrated resulted in the discovery of North America. In actuality, America had already been discovered. What Christopher Columbus did that makes Columbus Day a special time of celebration for the Spanish and those living in America is that his trip was the first interaction between the two worlds. For this reason, Columbus Day is celebrated in both Spain as well as in America.
Since Columbus Day is a holiday in most places, your celebration can last all day. If there is a local Columbus Day parade, this could start the celebrations. A Columbus Day party is a perfect outdoor event, with weather permitting. This party is one that features the best of both the American and Latin American worlds. To keep the spirit of the voyage alive, you may consider serving foods similar to those that were eaten by Christopher Columbus and his crew. The staple foods for the crewman included fish, nuts, raisins, cheese, rice, and molasses. You can create several snack trays in addition to small finger sandwiches and lay them on picnic tables.
In keeping with the spirit of the explorations of Christopher Columbus, a party to celebrate Columbus Day should feature a sailing trip. While the cost will vary according to area, for about $150 you can probably rent a sailboat, complete with a captain, for two hours. If you own a sailboat you’re ready to hit the water and make your own exploratory voyage!
